UrbanDrinks.com is back up now after 60+ hours of being down. Sorry about the inconvenience, and hopefully we didn't drive anyone away. I'm now in the process of moving the site from Dreamhost over to Planet Argon, and so far it's been very smooth. Of course as soon as the account at PA was set up, the Dreamhost server came back online.. but I'm still making the switch. For one thing, Planet Argon seems to have great customer service. Their site says that they normally get new accounts set up within 24-48 hours and don't do setups on the weekend. However, I called them at 10am today (they answered on the first ring!) and they had my account going by 3:45 this afternoon.
Planet Argon is also located about 10 or 20 blocks away from where I live, so it gives me the sense that my server is a tangible thing and not some magical beast in the ether somewhere in Arizona. PA also specializes in Rails applications, which is what UrbanDrinks.com is built on, so it makes sense from a technical point of view to make the switch. It will be nice not having to deal with fastcgi (or, to be fair, dealing with the processes getting killed off at Dreamhost) and use Mongrel instead.
I'll keep my Dreamhost account active and will likely use it to host this website and other small side projects. Dreamhost is quite a good deal when things are running smoothly and they've been great up until this point. They were slow to respond to my tickets over the last few days, but they also had over 800 open tickets at any given time, so maybe it was just a matter of being overloaded. When they did respond, they were courteous and professional. I'm not sure what went wrong at Dreamhost over the past few days, but it must have been rather major to have a server down for so long.
